Voice disorders can range from mild hoarseness to complete voice loss and are typically characterized by abnormal pitch, loudness or vocal quality. Swallowing problems can arise out of several diseases, conditions or surgical interventions. General signs include: coughing during or immediately after drinking and eating, extraordinary effort required to chew or swallow, and weight loss or dehydration from an inability to eat. Treatment depends on the cause, symptoms and type of swallowing problems but primarily focus on improving muscle movements and positions. Other strategies include the use of specific food and liquid textures that are easier and safer to swallow.
